How to get the best Decking Stockton on Tees

Decking can be an aesthetically pleasing alternative to harder forms of landscaping. However, some people may feel that the surface can be higher maintenance with more potential for slipping. This is why it is important to get the right form of decking from an experienced Stockton on Tees contractor.

The right option

As with other options, there are different types of material, designs and finishes that are available when installing decking. Some people feel that decking can exclude a lawn or more natural surface but this doesn’t have to be the case- it is perfectly possible to install decking and still be able to have a natural surrounding environment.

Decking can also be useful if you want to install a pool or a hot tub. It also helps if you have an area that slopes in your garden. While these areas may otherwise have been unusable, this allows you to make full use of what might have been neglected.

Choosing the right material

In order to avoid a slippery surface, it pays to install the right kind of material for your decking. High quality timber will reduce the risk of rotting and warping. If you use a softwood such as pine then it needs to be treated with a preservative.

With hardwoods like teak you can give your decking a more modern type of design, while at the same time being sturdier and more durable than other materials.

Proper maintenance

Another way to avoid making your decking slippery is to properly maintain it. Pressure washing should be done regularly in order to clear algae but not too often in order to reduce the risk of the wood rotting. Another alternative is to regularly clean the surface using a gentler technique such as brushing and scrubbing the surface.

Chicken wire is also an option but some people prefer not to attach it to the surface as it can be less aesthetically attractive. You can also find products such as aluminium inserts to reduce the risk of slipping (this option is easier to install and blends in more than chicken wire).

Installation issues

One thing to be wary of is potential disruption while installing your decking. If the decking is less than 30cm above the ground and covers less than half of the garden then it won’t need planning permission. However if you do need planning permission then you will also need to check local rules regarding building regulations.

Even if you don’t need planning permission it is worth discussing your plans with your neighbours in order to minimise disruption.
